Thursday
Weather
A cloudier day than Wednesday, with the odd spit and spot of light rain, but probably never enough to make the ground property, and certainly not enough to make puddles. Winds will be SW’ly light force 3 for the most part, just tickling moderate force 4 at times. Temperatures peaking at a comfortable but not exactly balmy 19-20°C.
Surf and the Water
Clean 2 foot surf, perhaps with the odd 3 foot set around breakfast time (if we’re lucky). Good swimming conditions on all coasts but especially on the north and east. Tidal movements will be big, with low water around lunchtime and high of only 9m around 6:50am and 9.4m around 7pm.
Friday
Weather
After a spell of overnight rain, Friday should dawn bright and fresh, and then after some fair weather cloud in the morning, we should see a bounty of sunshine in the afternoon. The air will be inherently cool, but with only a light force 3 WNW’ly breeze, the sun’s energy should lift the mercury to the 21 mark. Noticeably chilly overnight though, when we take a tumble to about 13°C.
Surf and the Water
Cleanish surf, due to the onshore wind being so light. Good wave size too, generally around 3 feet, with a couple of lucky 4 footers here and there. And of course light winds mean lovely swimming conditions on all coasts too, but the south and east coasts will be the real cream of the crop. Tidal movements will be even bigger, with low water around lunchtime and high of only 9.4m around 7:30am and 9.8m around 7:45pm.
The Weekend
Weather
Looking pretty lovely really, barely really changing from Friday. The light force 3 breeze just backing to a due W’ly direction, whilst the mostly clear skies give daily maxima of around 21°C and nightly minima of around 13°C. Town will always be the warmest spot, but only by a whisker.
Surf and the Water
More cleanish surf, due to the lightness of the wind, albeit onshore… Saturday just a sloppy 2 feet, but Sunday a more powerful 3-5 feet. And just like on previous days, the light winds will mean all coasts are ok for a swim, but some spots smoother than others, these generally being on the east coast. Big tides again (combined with a bit of a swell on Sunday) so be especially mindful of tidal currents if doing such activities as stand-up paddle-boarding. Those tides being 9.6m high at breakfast time each day. The evening highs, slightly bigger (9.9m and 9.7m respectively), but the actual top of the tide will be shortly after dusk (8:30pm and 9pm respectively),
Next Week
Weather
With winds coming mostly from the west… sometimes backing SW’ly, sometimes veering NW’ly, we can expect temperatures to be around average with some days bone dry and other days partially wet. I’ll be surprised if we don’t at least some sunshine every day. And I’ll be very surprised indeed to see any mist or fog, so if your’re planning to fly then you can probably relax and be confident that plans will run smoothly. By Friday, we will only be 4 nights away from the Autumnal Equinox, so days and nights are very nearly an equal 12 hours each, nights are drawing in, and the precious evening light should be exploited to the max.
Surf and the Water
The tides are always the most predictable element, and these will be reducing incrementally from a pretty whopping 9.4m mid-morning Monday, to just 7.3m late morning Friday. Surf-wise, it’s looking as though we will have waves of 1-3 feet in the first half of the week and 3-4 feet in the second. It also looks like the wind will often be light enough for clean conditions, but this will really fluctuate from day to day and even from hour to hour, so I can’t really pin anything down at this early stage, and anyway, to be somewhat still surprised by the elements (in this day and age) is one of the few opportunities that we get to be scintillated by the essence of life.
The next forecast update will be on Friday evening…
