Thursday
Weather
Grey and murky all day long, with the wind locked into a force 4 to 5 WSW’ly and the temperature hovering between 18 and 20°C day and night. Mist and the lightest spots of drizzle coming and going to all parishes, except perhaps the most sheltered parts of St Peter Port. High ground, such as the airport and around Torteval, alternating between thin mist and thick fog, thus leading to some inevitable hiccups in the flow of air traffic.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 2-3 foot surf, definitely rideable on a surfboard, but best of all for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Swimming conditions will be best at Fermain and Havelet. Tides will be 8.2m high at 11am and then low at 5:20pm.
Friday
Weather
A similarly murky morning to the previous 24 hours, but then, after a brief burst of drizzly rain at lunchtime, we should see clear air and brighter skies from mid-afternoon onward. The wind changing from a force 4-5 SW’ly in the murky half of the day, to a force 3-4 WNW’ly in the cleaner part. Max temps of 19°C in the west and 20°C in the east. Overnight temps falling to a relatively chilly 13°C, under mostly starry skies and an ever decreasing wind.
Surf and the Water
Choppy 3-4 foot surf, definitely rideable on a surfboard, but best of all for windsurfing or kitesurfing. Swimming conditions will be best at Fermain and Havelet in the morning, then still at Fermain but also Moulin Huet, Petit Port and Saints Bay in the afternoon. Tides will be 7.6m high at 11:45am and then low around 6pm.
The Weekend
Weather
Looking pretty lovely to be honest, with such light breezes (variable on Saturday, SE’ly on Sunday), that the plentiful sunshine should raise temperatures to a Saturday max of 23°C and then a Sunday max of about 25°C. Saturday night’s temps will be on the low side though, with minima of about 14°C, then recovering to about 17°C on Sunday. The equinox only being fifteen days away, so no doubt everyone has observed that the days are shortening and the nights are lengthening with noticeable rapidity now.
Surf and the Water
Currently looking like two days of decent clean surf, with nice slow-moving small tides. 3-4 foot waves shrinking to 2-3 feet through Saturday, further shrining to 2 feet through Sunday. Great swimming conditions on all coasts. Low water will be at breakfast time. High water will be about 7m at 1pm on Saturday, then 6.8m around 2:45pm on Sunday.
Next Week
Weather
Some ups and downs, and quite a bit of uncertainty about the timing and extent of these ups and downs. The general story being that winds will bring air from the Atlantic rather than the continent, keeping temperatures close to the September average whatever the weather. The latest expectation is for a bland mix of cloud and sunshine with a moderate W’ly wind on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, punctuated by a very wet and windy (SSW’ly) Tuesday, and a similar but less dramatic Thursday. Max temps will generally be between 19 and 22°C, min temps between 14 and 17°C.
Surf and the Water
We should have rideable waves every day, the biggest being 4-5 feet on Monday, the smallest being 2 feet on Thursday and Friday. All of it looking either choppy or sloppy but never brilliantly clean. The wind always onshore but varying between light and moderate. Swimming conditions occasionally good on all coasts, but always best on the east. Tidal movements will be very small on Monday, increasing very large by Friday (highs of 6.9m increasing incrementally to 9.8m).
The next forecast update will be on Sunday morning…
